Hot-Dip Galvanizing

Hot-dip galvanizing, in comparison to the protection of steel surfaces using other means, represents single long-term protection. In combination with dying, the quality of protection may last more than fifty years.

Hot-dip galvanizing has up till now in the world been the most efficient and ecologically acceptable method of protecting steel. In technological and economical terms, the hot-dip galvanizing method has mostly been used in protection against corrosion.

Hot-dip galvanization of products has a wide area of application: road equipment, lighting columns, steel-reinforcing for concrete, in the automobile and shipping industries, maritime equipment, railways, electrical power industry, agricultural structures, metal products and items, various fencing, steel grill-like structures, reservoirs for various purposes, utility equipment for public city areas and sporting venues, metal piping for various purposes and basically all other steel products exposed to atmospheric conditions.

Ten of the most important reasons for using hot-dip galvanizing:

  1. Lower production costs: hot-dip galvanizing is not labor intensive but instead is automated.
  2. Economic savings: due to the long product life, galvanized products allow long-term effective investments and a larger return on investment.
  3. Durability: 20-40 years in maritime conditions and 30-70 years in less severe conditions if the application layer is Zn 120nm.
  4. Triple protection: firstly – zinc layer applied using the hot-dip galvanizing process guarantees an anticipated long product lifecycle, secondly – zinc color covering all unprotected parts occurring during subsequent drilling, cutting or damage of the steel product, thirdly – prevention of lateral rust penetration of the steel product, occurring on the damaged area.
  5. Rapid application: coloring lasts weeks and depends on weather conditions, hot-dip galvanizing is basically done in a day.
  6. Quality and reliability: presence of world standards EN ISO 1461, ASTM-A 123.
  7. Mechanical resistance: the hot-dip galvanizing process offers additional mechanical resistance for the steel product.
  8. Easy testing of galvanization quality: the nature of the hot-dip galvanizing process is such that the protection quality is, if the zinc layer on the steel product looks solid and complete. The thickness of the zinc layer is easily controlled during and after the galvanizing process.
  9. Rapid application: galvanized steel is ready for immediate use and does not require additional treatment during use.
  10. Total covering of even the most complex steel product forms: even the most inaccessible places are well protected by zinc layers. Critical areas such as corners and edges are better protected than spayed or colored.
